Public Health Pest Control
Current hygiene legislation states that you must have adequate procedures in place to ensure pests are controlled, and that your premises are maintained avoiding the risk of compromising public health through contaminated foodstuffs, risk of disease or illness and by harbouring pests.
Pests such as flies, rats, mice, pigeons and stored product insects can be harmful to humans. Some carry diseases which may result in death whilst others can contaminate crops, foodstuffs, gnaw through electrical cables and damage pipe work causing fires and floods.
The two major legislations relating to public health and pest control are -
1. Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 which insists that you keep your premises free from rodents or report the infestation to your local authority if rodents are present in substantial numbers. If you are in the food business, the Act requires that you report any rodent infestations.
2. The Food Safety Act 1990 and the Food Hygiene (General) Regulations 1995 insist that food premises are kept as pest free as possible. This includes infestations by insects and birds, as well as rodents. The Act extends to cover any vehicles used to transport food.
Failure to keep your premises pest free can result in their closure or penalties of up to £20,000 for each offence, or up to six months in prison for serious breaches. This can also result in the Suspension of the responsible manager from working with food for six months.
