Wildlife Survey's for Protected Species and Consultancy Services

The presence of protected species such as Badgers and Bats can cause major problems on projects where major earthworks or construction works are planned. Suddenstrike Ltd has qualified and experienced technicians able to conduct extensive wildlife surveys and offer a consultancy service for advice regarding protected species.

Grey Squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis)

Grey Squirrels can cause many problems both in the countryside and in urban areas. They can kill hundreds of trees by stripping their bark off to get at the inner bark. Grey Squirrels will also dig up garden bulbs; inhabit lofts and attics chewing through wires, destroying loft insulation and an personal possessions that may be there; raid bird feeders, scaring song birds away; they also displace populations of our native Red Squirrel, because of the Grey Squirrels high breeding rate, greater physical attributes and adaptability to habitat change, Grey Squirrels have displaced Red Squirrels throughout most of the country. Grey Squirrels also carry the Parapoxvirus which is fatal to Red Squirrels

Suddenstrike Ltd offers many services to control and remove Grey Squirrels from all situations.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to release a Grey Squirrel or allow it to escape into the countryside as it is not an indigenous species to this country (it was introduced into the country from the United States and so is not native to Great Britain. Other such species include Rabbits and Mink)

Badgers (Meles meles)

The European Badger is the United Kingdom's (UK) largest native carnivore. Under the Protection of Badgers Act of 1992 it is an offence to kill a badger or to interfere with a sett without first obtaining a licence from Natural England.

Badgers can cause a great deal of damage to gardens when digging for food such as Chaffer Grubs, and it has long been believed by farmers and scientists that Badgers can transmit Bovine TB to cattle. Tests in the 1970's proved that TB was more common in Badgers than any other species.

We can conduct Badger surveys; treat gardens for grubs; construct permanent and temporary Badger fences to prevent Badgers from gaining access; install Badger gates; as well as the construction of artificial Badger setts and the relocation of Badgers under licence from Natural England.

Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

In the UK Foxes are more of a nuisance pest especially in urban areas, however they have also been known to cause problems such as killing livestock such as lambs and calves.

Suddenstrike Ltd offers a variety of services to control and manage Fox populations all of which are totally legal and compliant with UK law and legislation.

American Mink (Mustela vison)

American Mink are not native to the United Kingdom and as such under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to release Mink into the wild.

The entire American Mink population in the UK has been derived from American Mink kept at Fur farms which have either escaped or been illegally released intentionally.

The effects that American Mink can have on the native wildlife is devastating, they can and will kill and take Rabbits, Ducks, Water Voles, Shrews, Fish, Frogs, Moorhens, Rats, Birds (including ground nesting and song birds) and their eggs. It has been known for Mink to totally wipe out populations of fish in lakes and fisheries; they have also been linked to the decline of Water Voles in the UK.
